Education
Education is integral to reducing the prevalence and effects of homophobia and heterosexism. Through education that ranges from personal experience to academic/statistical knowledge people come to a greater understanding of gender and sexual diversity.
Who do we provide education for?
The Avenue Community Centre provides educational speaks and resources to elementary, high school & post secondary classrooms in a variety of subjects in an age appropriate fashion. We also provide sessions for professional associations & businesses, community groups & organizations, and anyone who is interested in coming to a better understanding about gender and sexual diversity. Regardless of the sexual or gender identity of the target audience we can provide timely and relevant speaks. We can provide the space or come to your organization.
What type of education do we provide?
We are very flexible and often cater our presentations to the audience requesting speaks from us. Speaks range from about an hour to full day workshops depending on how in-depth you want us to be. We often give general speaks about gender and sexual diversity, however we can also focus on specific members and/or specific issues of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, two-spirited and transgender community if you wish. Speaks can include but not limited to:
- Personal Experience
- Definitions & Terms
- Myths & Stereotypes
- Statistics
- Queer Theory
- Queer Health Issues
- Same Sex Relationship
- Anti-Gay Behaviour
- Queer Culture
- Policy & Procedure Review
- Small Group Exercises & Quizzes
- Question & Answer
