Woman to Woman Abuse Project Coordinator

Hi everybody! My name is Joanne Horsley and I am the new coordinator for the Woman to Woman Abuse Project, which is a project that is exploring access to care issues for women experiencing violence in same-sex relationships. Before I get into the project information, here is a little introduction to me. Before being a part of the ACC, I spent about 9 years working on campus at the University of Saskatchewan, first as a security guard with Campus Safety, and then as the Victim Advocate with the Students' Union. I am very passionate about the work that I do, and I really enjoy being a part of the community. I am thrilled to be a part of the ACC team, and I look forward to meeting you in person during our drop-in hours, or hearing from you by phone or email!

Project Objectives:

This project has 3 main objectives:

  • To develop strategies for change around the issue of woman-to-woman abuse
  • To create better understanding of woman-to-woman abuse and affect change in the policies, programs and services of organizations and service providers
  • To help women affected by the issue and the general public understand woman-to-woman abuse and to raise awareness of services and programs available to address woman-to-woman abuse

The Woman To Woman Abuse Project

The Woman to Woman Abuse Project is now moving into its' 2nd phase.  It is funded by Status of Women Canada through its Women's Community Fund.

The project currently includes an educational workshop regarding woman to woman domestic abuse/violence, which can be tailored in length and content to suit your individual work place or organization. As well, we maintain an open invitation for the ACC to perform a policy review at your work place or organization to ensure that your policies and procedures are lesbian friendly.

In addition to continuing to offer these services, this first year of the project will include a survey of lesbian, bisexual and trans women* regarding their program and service needs, as well as an examination of local, national and international best practice models. The focus of this stage will be on providing voice to the women who are and/or have been affected by domestic abuse/violence.

The 2nd and 3rd years of the project will consist of the actual creation and piloting of a program and/or service based on the survey and best practices research. This will be followed by an evaluation of this pilot program, and if all goes well permanent implementation of the program/service.
