Volunteer Opportunities

Looking to spend some time with us? We are currently looking to fill multiple Volunteer Roles within the Centre… Volunteers can enhance our ability to accomplish our goals and diversify our expertise and knowledge in the following ways:

Peer Support Phone Line and Drop-In Centre

Do you remember what it was like when you were coming out? Do you like the feeling that you get when you help people? We help people find their way through a variety of issues, and sometimes we're just a friendly voice. We coach our volunteer team using the Carkhuff helping model. This makes it easy to help people find their own answers, and most people find this model helpful in day-to-day relations with people. Come join our dynamic team of Volunteer caregivers, or just attend our volunteer training; you'll be surprised how easy it is to help people find their own answers.

Marketing and Communications

Volunteers are needed to assist us with the development and execution of marketing campaigns and promotion of key programs and projects.

Public Relations

Volunteers are needed to assist us with the development and implementation of Public Relations strategies.

Event Planning

Volunteers are needed to provide event planning support.

Fund Development

Volunteers are needed to assist us with creating fund development and implementation strategies in order to diversify sources of income and program support.

Research

Volunteers are needed to assist us with research to cover various project-based requirements.
Administration
Volunteers are needed to assist us with day-to-day operations.

Technical Support

Volunteers are needed to assist us with the design and maintenance of our website and other technical support.

Idea People

Volunteers usually come up with the best ideas. Period. When it comes to programming, services or general operations we value the input that our volunteers and clients bring to us. Instead of being on the outside looking in, be a part of making our community a better, safer, healthier place. FROM THE INSIDE OUT!

The Avenue Community Centre needs volunteers to work shifts on our peer counseling phone lines. This remains one of our most important services.

Generally, shifts run from 12:00 noon to 4:30pm, and 4:30 to 7:00 pm Mon to Fri. We also particularly need help covering the 5:30 to 7:00 pm time slot so if you are able to do even an hour, maybe after work, we would welcome you. An additional shift from 7 to 10 pm using a cell phone is available to experienced volunteers. All shifts are flexible.

Volunteers for the phone-line take our free 2-day Karkhuff-method training and attend several observation shifts so that both they and the trainers are comfortable with their ability to do effective peer counselling.

If you already have the weekend training but are feeling a little rusty, we can set up a time for a short refresher to bring you up to speed again.
