Welcome

The Avenue Community Centre for Gender & Sexual Diversity was incorporated in 1991 as Gay & Lesbian Health Services, a non-profit agency in Saskatoon working to address health and social issues in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, two-spirit and transgender (LGBTT) community.

The Avenue Centre welcomes and provides services to all people however they choose to define themselves in terms of sexual and gender identity, firm in our understanding that homophobia and heterosexism have an impact on the health and wellbeing of all in our society. We see our work as including but not restricted to education, support and improved access to health services.

Based on our understanding of the key determinants of health, we endeavour, in our services, to address the whole being and the environment in which the individual lives. We believe that our ongoing dialogue with the community provides the context and the knowledge which drive our programming.

The Centre provides a supportive place for people in our community regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, family and marital status, nationality, disability, gender, sexual orientation, age or income and social status.

The programs and services we offer include: operation of a 1- 800 telephone information and peer counselling line, a resource library and drop-in centre, support programs for specific target groups including transgender persons, gay & lesbian parents and queer youth, and social programming as requested by our community. We provide educational outreach to professionals and students in schools and university, health care and social services agencies as well as the LGBTT community and the larger community. We maintain programming partnerships with Sexual Health Centre of Saskatoon, AIDS Saskatoon and local abuse survivor service agencies. Many of our services and programs, such as the Prince Albert Extension Office, reach beyond Saskatoon to the rest of our province.
